February DNI Box: Key to My Heart

Ladies, I have to be honest with you: I totally fell in love with this box before I even opened it. The promo images alone were enough to get me excited. I loved the vintage Parisian theme of the box and looked like it held something mysterious and fun. I couldn't wait to get it.

I knew as soon as I opened it that this was going to be one of the more romantic boxes and I couldn't wait for our date night to begin.

The Key to My Heart Menu

Each box comes with an optional dinner menu designed by Marina of Marina Makes Blog to complement the monthly theme. When you sign into your DNI account, you can view the menu, recipes, and shopping list for the month(s) you’ve subscribed to. The shopping list is a great feature as it has everything you need for the meal plan and it’s conveniently organized into different sections of the grocery store.

This month's dinner menu was awesome—I was able to eat all of the dishes with only minor modifications. The dinner consisted of spaghetti squash cacio e pepe, French green beans, and blackberry and mint infused water (red wine as an option for those who prefer it!). The dessert was chocolate covered frozen bananas. So yummy!

Key to My Hear Ambiance

The DNI experience also includes ambiance. First, there is a Spotify playlist designed around the theme. Actually, there are two: a standard playlist and a faith-based playlist. We used the faith-based playlist, which was a nice, balanced mix of artists such as Elevation Worship, Bethel Music, and All Sons & Daughters. Some of my favourite songs were on the list but I also discovered lots of new songs I loved.

This box included a container of Aromabeads wax melts, which smelled very nice, but without a wax warmer to melt them in, the effect was a little subdued.

As we enjoyed our dinner, we reflected on the Table Talk questions provided in the Key to My Heart pamphlet. This month, Night In Boxes partnered with the American Heart Association to provide a focus on not just the emotional aspect of our hearts but also the physical aspects. Therefore, the Table Talk questions revolved around heart health and steps that we can take to ensure that our hearts are strong and healthy.

The Activities

We started the evening by taking a Five Love Languages Quiz. We had done this in a marriage course several years ago, so it was really interesting to do it again and see how things have changed over the years. This was followed up by the optional faith-based discussion guide, which gave a Biblical overview for each of the five love languages. This led to a surprising conversation about how our understanding and appreciation of each of the love languages have also changed over the years as our situations have changed and our relationship has grown. This was a very worthwhile exercise.

date night in box review love letters

When we had finished eating, our first activity was to write secret love letters to each other. DNI provided a list of suggested topics we could use in our letters. The letters were then sealed in envelopes and tucked away for later.

Then we got to play a really cool 'Escape Room' themed game. Now, I have absolutely no interest in actual escape rooms; just the thought of it sends shivers down my spine. I don't like the feeling of being locked in a room at all. This, however, was totally different. It had the fun, strategic, code-breaking element of escape rooms without any of the stress.

So, the situation is that you've been sent back to 1919 and you've become separated from your love. You are desperate to track them down, but you have no leads except for this mutual friend who has agreed to secretly arrange a rendezvous. Each of these sealed cards holds a clue as to the date, time, and location of your meeting, and love is on the line here people! This is serious business.

We may be total nerds but this was right up our alley. We loved breaking the codes and working out the puzzles to find the missing info. And once we did, our reward was getting to open the letters we'd written each other earlier in the evening.

The mid-date snack was chocolate filled crepes! How amazing is that? Who even knew that you could get something like that in a package?

Finally, we played another game, which we were not quite as good at. This one was sort of like the game Taboo. You had to get your spouse to say a Parisian-themed word by giving them one-word clues. I think the cards were stacked against us (or perhaps we dealt them backwards) because we ended up with all the really hard words (like Napoleon!) first and all the easy words (like baguette) at the end. We had fun, but we also realized how little we know about so many French things (history, geography, wine...). We had the food ones nailed down though!

To make the night just a little more perfect, we finished it off with an episode of This is Us on Netflix. 🙂

The Verdict

It is evident to me that somebody (or somebodies) at Night In Boxes put a lot of heart and a lot of effort into making this box as special as it was. Every detail was thoughtfully put together, and I really appreciated the experience that was offered to us.
