Gnome Matter What Valentine’s Day Craft for Kids

Valentine’s Day is coming up right around the corner and our houses are soon to be filled with tiny cards, chocolates, and cinnamon hearts. If you’re looking for a fun Valentine’s Day craft to do with kids this year, why not try something unconventional, like a gnome? Nothing says “I love you” like a shaggy-bearded man who can’t keep his hat out of his eyes.

A Valentine’s Craft that Works for Many Ages

When it comes to craft ideas, I often find it difficult to come up with inspiration. Most of the time, I find it easier to let my kids come up with the craft and just let them exercise their creativity. 

But lately I’ve noticed that they’re coming up short on ideas too. We have a few favorite stand-by crafts that we go for, but we’re basically in a creative rut. 

So, a few weeks ago, we wandered down the aisles of our favorite little craft supplies store hoping that bins of colored paper, paint, sponges, and pipe cleaners would spark some ideas. Thankfully, we were not disappointed. 

We walked in the door and saw this sweet little gnome made out of a toilet paper roll and pink and red felt, and immediately we knew we needed a Valentine’s Day gnome. Is there really any celebration that’s not made sweeter with the addition of one of these little guys? 

Once we knew we were going with a gnome, we just needed a pun to make him stand out, something to be remembered by. ‘Gnome matter what’ got stuck in our heads, and this fun project was ready to come to life!

Last week, I posted about a Valentine’s Day craft for kids with four variations for different age groups or preferences. This week, we’ve got another fun project that can be adapted for lots of different ages. In the video below, you’ll see me assembling this with my five-year-old daughter, but both of my older girls—ages 11 and 12—had a great time with this one as well. 

I’m Yours, Gnome Matter What

Supplies needed:

• 2 pieces of cardstock
• 3 pieces of colored felt
• Small square of craft fur
• Foam or adhesive hearts (optional)
• Glue
• Pen or Sharpie
• I’m Yours, Gnome Matter What printable (below)
• Scissors
• Printer
• Small brush (optional)

Print out the I’m Yours, Gnome Matter What printable on your cardstock.

Cut out all the pieces. (You only need to choose one of the beard shapes—either the pentagon for a fuller beard or the triangle for a narrower beard).

Using a pen or Sharpie, trace the cutouts onto your chosen colors of felt. 

Cut out the felt.

Brush the craft fur up in the wrong direction, then cut out your beard. (You may have difficulty tracing onto the back of the craft fur. Depending on the age of your kids, you may want to just cut the beard out freehand for them, using the printout as a guide).

Glue the body onto the paper, lining the bottom of the felt up on or near the bottom of the page.

On top of the body, add the hat and the brim.

Add the beard, lining it up with the bottom of the hat.

Add the nose.

Decorate the paper with foam hearts, stickers, or drawings.
